The late D.H. Short, a cardiac surgeon, had medical licenses in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, and South Carolina. He was president of the Coast Counties Medical Society and a fellow at the American College of Angiology.
Short and his wife, Kathie, bred award-winning West Highland white terriers. He was the president of the Mississippi Coast German Shepherd Dog Club. The Shorts had 28 dogs when the storm hit and were able to save all of them.
