Each month, we highlight a piece of Rotary history and share an inspirational quote from past Rotary leaders. February’s quote:

"The spirit of Rotary is not exclusive; it expands. It is not local, it is universal. And so the wish to understand and to be understood, the wish to see the virtues rather than the faults in others, the longing to find out what we have in common rather than what divides us — these can be widely shared."

— Gian Paolo Lang, 1956-57 RI president, address to 1957 convention

It was Rotarian James Wheeler Davidson in 1928-29 spread Rotary throughout the Middle East. Let us honor his achievement with a concerted Rotary inititive in this same region at this time of need. The recent events in the Middle East, where Rotary thrives, have given the youth of Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan a powerful voice, calling for freedom, democracy and empowerment. Rotary has the youth oriented infrastructure and tools via our Clubs and RYLA Interact and Rotaract programs to channel the energy of the youth in the countries to express their commitment to service, fellowship and shared values. While the Peace Forum in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt organized by District 2450 representing a large block of the Arab world was cancelled, I call on Rotarians from this District and District 2490 (Israel) to join hands to develop a super-regional, multi-district RYLA, Interact and Rotaract strategy of Rotarian service and fellowship activities to listen and understand and take action through Rotary to promote peace, understanding, goodwill, fellowship and service at this critical time in our region.
