Rotarians seek aid for victims of violence in Kenya

Residents of Kenya need humanitarian aid following the 27 December election that sparked violence across the country. More than 650 people were killed, and more than 250,000 are displaced. Many of the displaced are staying in camps within the Rift Valley and Western Kenya, while others fled into neighboring Uganda and Tanzania.

Immediate needs include blankets, cooking fuel, food, health care, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting, shelter, and water and sanitation. Because of continued violence in the streets, many people have been unable to buy food or go to work. It’s anticipated that long-term recovery efforts will involve reconstruction of houses and buildings and the continued provision of food.

Kenyan Rotary clubs need financial contributions. Because of the difficulty in routing donated goods, cash donations only are requested at this time. Rotarians are partnering with the Kenya Red Cross Society to provide hands-on assistance. A committee of Rotarians in Nairobi has been established to oversee disaster relief activities.

The current situation has increased the urgency of our efforts and we are learning of the total loss of all possessions and business among those in the slum involved in the highly successful Maji Mazuri micro-enterprise program. Details of our project are at www.DaytonRotary.com under "Kenya Project." We have been in continuous contact with our Nairobi Rotarians and those working in the slum and on the farm trying to expedite our efforts.

However, it is highly likely that further cash donations will be required over time and we'd like to let you know more about the children's home we are supporting so you can hopefully put it onto your own relief list. I would be grateful if you could contact me for more details. Our website sirc-webspace.spaces.live.com/ also contains details of what we are doing to ty to help
