 Letters (July 2009)

As the first RI president from Canada in many years, I know that Canada has much to contribute to North American Rotary -- and that it has contributed a very great deal to Rotary history. We all know that the Rotary Club of Winnipeg has the honour of being the Rotary club that "made Rotary international," and that Canadian Rotarians like Jim Davidson, J. Layton Ralston, and Donald MacRae, along with Canadian Rotary clubs, have also done a great deal to spread Rotary beyond North American borders.

The Rotarian magazine will continue to cover the work of Canadian Rotarians, but Rotary Canada will be dedicated solely to the work of Canadian clubs.

I hope that Rotary Canada will be useful for all Canadian Rotarians, and I look forward to reading both in English and French about your accomplishments in its pages.

As a proud member of a Canadian Rotary club, I'm very pleased to see this supplement to The Rotarian. As past chair of The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees, I know that Canadian Rotarians have always been strong supporters of our Foundation. In fact, Canada ranked fifth in giving to the Foundation in 2007-08. As chair of the International PolioPlus Committee, I am also aware of your generous contributions to global polio eradication. Canadian clubs are fi nding many creative ways to support Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, and I look forward to reading about some of your successful fundraisers in future issues of Rotary Canada.

This publication will help all of us connect with our fellow Canadian Rotarians and further appreciate the immense scope of their work.

Congratulations on this inaugural issue of Rotary Canada, as we'll now have a way to spotlight more of Canadian Rotarians' achievements.

It is fitting that we are launching this quarterly supplement during the 2009-10 Rotary year, which also marks 100 years since the Rotary movement took hold in Canada. This year is also special because Montréal will host our annual convention in June. This cosmopolitan city is ideal for celebrating our ongoing international spirit. I hope that many Canadians will join my wife, June, and me in Montréal.

President, Rotary International
Rotary Club of Grangemouth, Scotland

A year ago, I sent the proposal for the new supplement to the 23 governors with Canadian Rotary clubs in their districts. Governors surveyed their clubs, and received 87 per cent support for Rotary Canada. Canadian Rotary clubs should use this publication as a tool for recruiting and retaining members and promoting the image of Rotary at public events. This initiative proudly demonstrates what Rotarians can accomplish when we work together. Thank you for what you have done for Rotary.
