Thirty to fifty percent of young children (ages one to four) and 90 percent of infants in India will be infected with the HBV. Many will become chronically ill with the virus. HBV immunizations are not included in health coverage in Odisha, India and many families cannot afford the vaccine. The Rotary Club of Chatrapur-Ganjam is seeking funds to immunize all children from birth to one year of age against the Hepatitis B virus. The club will also educate families about Hepatitis, Malaria, Diarrheal diseases, personal hygiene, and other transmittable diseases. Each child under the age of one year will receive three doses of the vaccine at an interval of four weeks. If desired, a booster dose can be administered after six months.
