Best Practice A tip for increasing seminar attendance:
Our zone held a seminar to increase Rotarians in the areas of membership development and Rotary Foundation support. An attendance competition was issued to all the districts to help increase attendance at this seminar.
ResourcesAs an award for the attendance competition, one district offered a chance to win a week at the vacation home of a Rotarian to those who attended the seminar from the district.
ResultsAttendance at the seminar was very high. Many who had not attended a seminar before left with comments like, I should have come here years ago!
The district that had the vacation home attendance competition had almost three times the attendance of the other districts.

Resources1. The Rotary Foundation Handbook 2. Overhead projector and slides 3. TRF Annual Report 4. White board & flipcharts
ResultsLeaders of Rotary clubs knew more about the TRF Programs - especially the Matching Grants Program and the funding of the same. Stewardship of TRF funds and how it was to be done & followed with transperancy would go a long way in the fulfilling of the requirements of the TRF/RFI

Best Practice Sunshine Division, Rotary Leadership Institute In 2004, District 6960 held a Rotary Leadership Institute session - Part I only. Since that time, the Rotary Leadership Institute has become a permanent fixture. Our club strongly encourages (pays for and emphasizes) that all committee chairs and incoming officers participate.
ResourcesNone. All came from the Rotary Leadership Institute.
ResultsOutstanding. The word is out that if someone wants to become a leader in our club, they must take the Rotary Leadership Parts I, II, and III.

Best Practice Copying from other Districts, we changed the District Assembly from a 1/2 day Monday morning to a 3 PM to 8:30 PM Wednesday including dinner. What happened that was special was a 90 minute section from 4 PM until 5:30 PM where we had breakout sessions for the following: Membership development Public Relations and Websites Presidents-elect Vocational Service Youth Community Service International Service Rotary Foundation Our District Foundation. Through publicity, which started at the first Pre-PETS meeting in January, weekly e-mails, hard copy letters and support from the assistant governors, attendance was 210 people - double the previous year representing all but two district clubs. Over 50 Rotarians were involved in planning, leading the discussion groups, publicizing and executing the event.
ResourcesMaterials were prepared by the district, but the best materials were brought to the event by the various committees.

Best Practice We used a game show format for most of our training at our last district conference. On Friday, we played Rotary Jeopardy and on Saturday we played Who Wants to be a Paul Harris Fellow.
ResourcesWe rented a set that had three contestants and used a computer and LCD projector to display the questions to the Jeopardy contestants. We did not need any additional materials for Who Wants to be a Paul Harris Fellow.
ResultsWe had PDGs tell us that they have never had more Rotary information conveyed in such a short period of time.

Best Practice Monthly orientation meetings for new members
I was the membership committee chair and recruited a lot of new members (25). I want them to feel that they are a very important part of the club. We meet for 15 minutes once a month after a regular club meeting. Each meeting has a specific subject and I ask them to come prepared. I usually have another committee chair conduct the meeting. The first meetings were on fundraising and fellowship. Future meetings will be on the Foundation, membership, and programs.
Resources
ResultsSo far it has been very successful and we have come up with many outstanding ideas. The new members really like it and get to know more about the club. Several have joined the committees that we talk about.

Best Practice PowerPoint Quizzes
I have written a series of 10 PowerPoint quizzes which can be used as informational programs for club meetings, as well as for new member orientation.
ResourcesPowerPoint, Rotary Global History Web site, writings of Paul Harris, RI Manual of Procedure, and other materials from RI.
If you would like to review these for distribution to other district governors for their districts, please give me an email address to which I might forward one or more of them for your perusal.
ResultsClubs in our district are using these PowerPoints for new member orientation and club programs. Prior to this, almost none of our clubs had Rotary-oriented programs. The quizzes are light and interesting, generating enthusiasm for Rotary history and information.

Best Practice STRS (Success Through Rotary Seminars) was developed in District 5180 in 2004. It is offered to Rotarians within our District and has been taught to Rotarians in neighboring District 5170. STRS includes the following modules: Leadership, Communications, Planning & Budgeting, Effective Meetings and Rotary & You. Super STRS includes modules on Social Media, Excel, PowerPoint and Web Master training.
ResourcesWe originally looked at PRLS (Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar) from a neighboring District. We took some of their ideas, added some of our own and continue to improve both our offerings and our instructors.
ResultsWe have trained over 500 Rotarians in the past 7 years. We believe that STRS and Super STRS make Rotary more effective in our District and therefore make our District more effective in doing the work of Rotary
