Overview
District governors-nominee are selected to serve as district governor 12 to 24 months before taking office. During this period, governors-nominee should learn about their district and its clubs and begin to work closely with their district leaders to support effective clubs.
Responsibilities of governors-nominee include:
- Analyzing districts' strengths and weaknesses in terms of public relations, membership, The Rotary Foundation, district events, and RI programs and using background material provided by past governor, current governor, and governor-elect and RI resources
- Reviewing district and club leadership plans
- Attending district meetings at the invitation of the governor or governor-elect
- Participating in district committees or other activities, as suggested by the governor or governor-elect
- Selecting a site for the district conference during year as governor

Getting to know the district
To create greater continuity within the district leadership team, the governor-nominee should work closely with the current governor and governor-elect, especially on activities that last more than one Rotary year, such as strategic planning, district appointments, and district service projects.
Governors-nominee should consider:
- Reviewing the district organizational structure
- Understanding the functions of district committees
- Becoming familiar with the Club Leadership Plan
- Reviewing the district’s annual goals and strategic plan using the District Planning Guide
- Becoming familiar with each club in the district
- Reviewing district membership trends to understand the membership opportunities that exist
- Planning leadership team appointments
- Observing a variety of district events

Financial management
Governors-nominee should also consider fiscal responsibilities, such as managing district finances, practicing good stewardship, and ensuring compliance with local laws, including tax and nonprofit, where applicable.

Good communication helps to foster effective clubs, achieve goals, coordinate club visits, encourage membership growth, increase support for The Rotary Foundation, and promote the district's work to Rotarians and the community.

District conference
The district conference is a time for fellowship, celebration, inspirational addresses, and discussion of club and district affairs.
Governors-nominee should consider:
- Selecting the time and place for the district conference
- Observing other district conferences in the same zone
- Appointing a district conference committee and aide to the president’s representative
- Promoting the district conference

Creating a calendar
The calendars of governors-elect and governors fill up quickly. Governors-nominee have a year to plan and think about which meetings to observe and which clubs to visit in order to become more familiar with the district.
Some strategies include:
- Observing a variety of district meetings
- Observing a governor’s official visit
- Attending a district governor-nominee training, if available
- Registering for the RI Convention
- Organizing a district leadership training
