Rose George became interested in sanitation when she encountered the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in New Delhi, set up to “make toilets interesting.” Her book, The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters , makes a case for moving poor sanitation – which kills more children under five than AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria – up the global political agenda. The Economist judged it one of the best science books of 2008. She’s now working on another project about unseen infrastructure: the world of freight.

Kate Francis’ work first appeared in The Rotarian in the January 2009 how-to issue. Her illustrations this month accompany Rose George’s story “Nowhere to go.” Her work has been featured in books including How to Make (Almost) Everything: A Do-It-Yourself Primer and in magazines such as Condé Nast Traveler , AARP: The Magazine , GQ , Popular Science , and Men’s Health . She is a fan of how-to illustrations that “break down the process step by step to give a clear understanding of construction.”

Staff photographer Monika Lozinska-Lee came to Rotary International in 2005 to join the Broadcast Media Department, whose members travel the world to document the important humanitarian projects in which Rotarians are engaged. Her recent work has been published in Printmaking at the Edge . For the photo essay “French Lessons,” she photographed Interactors and their projects, which include cleaning up by the lake, teaching grade school children to bake, playing basketball with people with disabilities, and fundraising.

Shirley Stephenson is a registered nurse who works in a Chicago emergency department. She has traveled with medical teams in Haiti, South Africa, and other developing countries. Her years as a wilderness camping and ecotourism guide took her from southern Mexico to Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands. Her writing has appeared in the Gettysburg Review , First of the Month , the North American Review , and other publications.
