Honduras project is a family affair
The Rotarian -- August 2010
F or years, Gary Johnson had wanted to go to Honduras for his district’s annual project – and to bring his daughter with him. In February, he decided it was time.
District 5580 (part of Ontario, Canada; North Dakota and parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA) sends teams of doctors, dentists, and other volunteers to work with the Rotary Club of Santa Bárbara on local service efforts. Gary and Rachel, 15, spent their days reconstructing village school buildings. “These schools represent education, stability, a safe place to go,” says Gary, who took this photo. He and Rachel were struck by how the children wore clean, pressed white uniforms, even though many lived in homes with dirt floors and no electricity or running water. “It tells you what it means for them to be going to school.”
