I realized that there is no group - governments, NGO's, Rotary clubs, foundations, or wealthy billionaires - who can adopt all the people who need help to stay alive -families where children are expected to add to the needed resources for family survival from the time they can walk and talk. And the current system does not keep them alive. I heard about the millions who die every day from starvation, disease, and the many other causes from inadequate protection from natural disasters to the extreme stresses of every day living. The only solution is to spend whatever resources are available on those things that will allow them to self provide that which is necessary to sustain family life. I see basic skills - reading, writing, and understanding basic math - as the first steps to reduce poverty and the exploitation of personal ability that accompanies it. And secondly, these people need a way to produce a product needed by others that will bring in enough resources so they can provide for their own needs. Death, as described , will continue but the starting place to turn this around is to insure that every child obtains these basic skills. And, when every mother, every woman, has these skills and a way to earn an income, the family's stability and education will be greatly excellerated. Therefore, I chose the child reading photo. Start now to provide this.

We must continue to put this as our first priority despite the urgent needs of the other efforts. Literacy, Clean water etc. The efforts of all the Rotarians and others who fight for the complete eradication of Polio must be rewarded. Service above Self that is why I chose the picture of the voluteer encouraging the child to open wide for the vaccine. The saved lives and the saved resources once polio is eradicated are beyond measure.

So therefor I am not going to cast my vote based on the great stories that accompany the outstanding photos, rather, since if I understand the contest correctly, this is a photo contest to best depict our ideal of "Service above Self". Looking at the photo's I only see one which shows one human being helping another human being, thus , the photo taken by Susan Wischhusen of Didler Fosse as he administers an oral polio vaccine to a child as visibly exemplifing "Service above Self". Congradulations to Susan for her excellent photo, Didler Fosse for his humanitary service and for the unnamed child for his/her victory over polio.
