Hospital on wheels

Low-income children and seniors in Livermore, Calif., USA, are receiving medical attention in an unusual environment: a truck.

The Rotary clubs of Livermore and the Livermore Valley raised all of the money –$350,000 – needed to purchase the 39-foot truck, which is equipped to serve as a doctor’s office, for ValleyCare Health System, a nonprofit organization that provides health care in and around Livermore. The area has a high number of uninsured or underinsured residents, and until the truck came along, many of them turned to ValleyCare’s emergency room for health services.

ValleyCare staffs and maintains the vehicle and uses it to provide health care at schools, senior centers, churches, and other locations. Livermore Rotarian John Linn hopes that when parents bring their children in for checkups, they’ll take advantage of the opportunity to get examined themselves.

Looking like an RV on the outside, the vehicle contains two exam rooms and is staffed by Spanish and English speakers. Patients can be screened for illnesses such as tuberculosis and diabetes or get medical services, including immunizations, cholesterol checks, and physical exams. The cost of services is based on a patient’s income, and care is often provided free of charge.

In addition, the vehicle can serve as a clinic in case of earthquakes or other disasters.
