Rotary.org: The Rotarian

 Editor's page (April 2009)

We celebrate Magazine Month in April, and in this issue we have produced a map to highlight all the countries and regions where editions of Rotary magazines are published. We are proud of this vast print network. The Rotarian and our 31 regional magazines are fundamental elements of communication between Rotary International and Rotarians. The Rotarian is in its 98th year of helping to help make members feel a part of the enormous family of Rotary.

Even though the Internet has changed how some of us stay in touch, The Rotarian remains at the center of what we do. We don’t have to wait for Rotarians buy the magazine – it comes to them, and it is the one sure way of transmitting information accurately and directly from RI to members.

Our regional magazine partners also have a long tradition within their Rotary communities. They recognize local accomplishments and highlight successful projects, as well as promote regional events and activities. Rotarians read about what other clubs are doing and forge links between clubs and districts. It’s a way to give clubs ideas and to encourage them to get in touch with each other and work together. The regional magazines keep clubs fresh and also motivate them with examples of what others are working on.

RI publishes materials in nine languages, including English, but Rotarians speak hundreds. Many Rotarians don’t read English, and so the regional magazines, published in 25 other languages, are an important way to keep them informed and connected.

Elsewhere in this issue, Dr. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health and internationally acknowledged for his medical expertise in developing countries, presents his solutions to the complex issues of child mortality. Archbishop Emeritus and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu needs no introduction. He is the keynote speaker at the 2009 Rotary World Peace Symposium on 18 June in Birmingham, England, and the subject of “The Rotarian Conversation”.

We hope this shows that our magazines continue to be essential information outlets. If you want to know where RI stands on an issue, or find out more about the convention and other Rotary events, the magazine is your source.
