Dave Hoekstra owned a few Hawaiian shirts before his trip to Hawaii, USA, so he was dressed appropriately when he checked on a project sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kona this summer. In “Rotarians in Paradise,” he visits a newly built playground. He has been a staff writer at the Chicago Sun-Times since 1985.
The whimsical column illustrations by Dave Cutler began appearing in The Rotarian in 2005. Cutler is a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Graphic Artists Guild. His work has been printed in Time, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Glamour, and Newsweek , among other publications, and his corporate clients include AT&T, IBM, Microsoft, UPS, General Electric, HBO, and Sprint. His first children’s book, When I Wished I Was Alone , was published in 2003.
Paul Engleman writes for The Rotarian regularly. In this issue, he looks at how Rotary survived the Great Depression. The article is accompanied by first-person accounts of those days from seven Rotarians in their 10th decade, interviewed by our former intern Tara Kalmanson. Engleman also writes for AARP: The Magazine, Chicago magazine, and the Chicago Tribune , and is working on his eighth novel.
Armed with an art degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, Greg Clarke began his professional career in an ad agency as an art director. He followed that with a stint as a graphic designer before turning to illustrations full time. His images have appeared in Rolling Stone , Mother Jones , the Atlantic , and Time , among others. He also illustrates children’s books, most recently How to Raise Mom and Dad .
