  • This wildfire season has been one of the worst in the history of California, USA. As of 22 July, state firefighters had battled 51 fires burning a total of 978,180 acres, according to the Governor's Office of Emergency Services .
  • The earthquake that hit China's southwest Sichuan province on 12 May registered an 8.0 magnitude on the Richter scale and killed more than 60,000 people. Among the most deadly in modern history was the 8.2-magnitude earthquake that flattened Tangshan, China, on 28 July 1976. An estimated 242,000 people in Tangshan and the surrounding areas died, surpassed only by the 300,000 who perished in the Kolkata earthquake in 1737 and the 830,000 thought to have perished in China's Shaanxi province in 1556. The strongest recorded earthquake rocked Chile on 22 May 1960, measuring 9.5 on theRichter scale.
  • After a month of heavy storms, the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA, crested at 31 feet on 13 June, engulfing more than 9 square miles of Cedar Rapids. Floodwaters left at least 25,000 residents homeless and more than 5,300 houses and 1,000 businesses damaged or destroyed. The previous historical crest for the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids had been 20 feet on 1 June 1851.
