Fast facts about children
Before eradication efforts began in 1988, polio paralyzed more than 1,000 children a day, according to PolioPlus.
In 2004, more than 13.8 million, or 19 percent, of American children resided in food-insecure households, meaning they were hungry or at risk of hunger, according to America's Second Harvest.
Of the 10.5 million deaths of children under five years old each year, almost half occur in sub-Saharan Africa, according to UNESCO.
Each year, about one million substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect occur in the United States, according to the National Association of Counsel for Children.
