R otarians have spoken! The winner of the 2007-08 Rotary photo contest is Richard S. Lawrence. The Rotarian magazine staff had the tough job of whittling hundreds of entries down to six finalists, but Rotarians made the final decision on whose photo best illustrates Service Above Self.

"I’m just so happy I could do it," Lawrence said. "If it weren’t for the support of Rotarians in so many ways I wouldn't have been able to take the picture. It's so humbling an honor to me to accept it on their behalf."

Lawrence's photo will appear in the September issue of The Rotarian.

The Rotarian: Richard S. Lawrence, Rotary Club of Manchester, Conn., USA
The Place: Cojomachaj, Guatemala
The Service Above Self Moment: A Guatemalan boy inspects a cup of water made possible by Rotarians in District 7890. Eleven clubs in the district raised more than $24,000 to provide water filters, vented pit latrines, and raised vented stoves for each of 52 families in Guatemala.

I was, after an hour, able to download the submission page but have found it impossible to use. I fill in all the blanks, upload a photo and the whole thing disappears. This is a very user unfriendly form. Can someone please help me??????? Frustrated in Seattle.

Many battles fought, many died for it, If only Rotarians gear up and give a little bit things can change (& have changed) We in third world face this problem and have more work to do to provide safe and pure drinking water. I would really appriciate if we get a guidance from any other club on water management with emphasis on retention of the facility through local participation. lets not only provide WATER but give an opportunity to LIVE.

The other Clubs, though good and worthy groups, focused too much on the Social aspect! I accepted the invitation to join Rotary because in that group of men, I saw a desire to make the World a better place! My observation was correct! The images shown above bear out that Truth! The benefit is that I got the best of both worlds……… True friendships, and Service (to the World) above Self!
