R I News spoke with several district governors-elect after the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, when RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka announced the 2012-13 theme, Peace Through Service . Here’s what they had to say.

Tokunao Tanaka
District 2770 (Japan)
"Peace is the ultimate purpose of every human, country, community, and family. Peace concerns everybody. This is a great theme because peace is something deep to all of us."

Thomas Fallon
District 7300 (Pennsylvania, USA)
“The idea of peace fits perfectly with Rotary. There are so many ways the theme can be interpreted, and it’s my goal to help clubs interpret in a way that suits them best.”

Ted Koziel
District 7070 (Ontario, Canada)
“Because peace covers all areas of focus, it will mean something different to each Rotarian. The theme makes perfect sense for the organization.”

Laura Day
District 5160 (California, USA)
“When people think of peace they first think of stopping war. But this theme touches on much more – hunger, education, and so many other things. The theme will resonate well.”

Dharshan John
District 3220 (Sri Lanka)
“Peace is looked at differently, and because we come from different cultures, we’re all going to carry out the theme in different ways. When all these things come together, we will have an incredible fusion.”

Rick Sterne
District 7090 (parts of Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA)
“The greatest thing about a theme centering on peace is that it’s all-encompassing. It can be used in whatever way it’s needed.”
