Several news organizations have reported cases of vaccine-derived polio in northern Nigeria.

Vaccine-derived polio is extremely rare, occurring when the weakened form of the virus in the oral polio vaccine regains its abilities to cause disease. Though rare, vaccine-derived polio is a reality in areas such as northern Nigeria—one of four remaining polio-endemic countries- where several communities are markedly under-vaccinated against polio.

These cases underscore the importance of the efforts of Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to reach every child with the polio vaccine.

At 10:14AM on 19 October 2007, Robert Murdoch D.O.M. wrote: When in 1954 after the Sabin vaccine had been seen to be ineffective against many polio outbreaks, Jonas Salk unveiled the Salk vaccine. Francis et al. and the University of Michigan administered and published the world's largest clinical trial so far in 1955. They tested the vaccine on over 1 million children. There were also approximately 750,000 placebo doses administered. After 6 months 57 of every 100,000 vaccinated children had contracted polio, 54 of every 100,000 placebo dose children contracted polio. Several of the vaccinated group were removed from the study when they contracted polio very soon after receiving the vaccine. Based on that, the vaccine was deemed safe and effective and approved for release. Between its release in mid-1955 and 1957 polio rates in the US spiked until polio was reclassified, at which point everyone with headaches, photophobia, cervical rigidity, fever were now to be diagnosed as having "aseptic meningitis", later to be named "viral meningitis". So polio rates plummeted and aseptic meningitis rates soared. Given such sound statistics we need to look at what else we are providing people in the developing world. Education? Plumbing? Other medical services, including quarantine? Adequate nutrition? If we are supplying any of these whilst administering vaccines, then the claims that the vaccines are wiping out this dreadful disease are scientifically unfounded. Please research outbreaks in vaccinated populations. Please research seroconversion as the measure used by governments, health agencies and pharmaceutical companies to confirm vaccine effectiveness, vs resistance to mortality and morbidity in vaccinated and unvaccinated groups in an infected population.

It must be the concern of all to make sure that polio is eradicated completely from all over the world. Polio anywhere is polio everywhere!!!
At 7:31AM on 11 October 2007, Brian Sway wrote: It would be helpful for our Polio Plus leaders to provide us with some education about vaccine derived polio and it's implications. I for one do not understand whether these reported instances fit within the norm and known consequences of large immunization initiatives or if the number and nature of the cases being reported are indicative of a new dimension. If it is the former, as proponents of global immunization, we must be educated quickly by our public health leaders and help others to understand. If we do not yet understand the validity, extent of or cause of these new reported cases of vaccine derived cases, as stewards of the polio eradication initiative, we have a public trust obligation to pause, launch a rapid-strike investigation with other world health organizations and the health officials of Nigeria to verify the validity or cause of this outbreak and develop and communicate a responsible response. Pushing ahead without either of these responses would at best would not honor the 4 Way Test, and in the worse case cause irreparable harm to Rotary's reputation and credibility.

At 1:16PM on 10 October 2007, John Puig wrote: I find it a more than a little unnerving that the article above mentions polio derived from vaccines. (a very real and legitimate risk with vaccines.) Not one comment address the issue of assuring vaccine safety! The cases of polio reported are from the vaccine? No? So would that not indicate a responsible reaction of investigating the safety of the present vaccine and the exact statistics of these cases, not a marching drum response how do we get more vaccine out to more children? I too believe in aiding the children of the world, but also feel risk must be evaluated and taken very seriously. Accountability, to me means acting mindfully and with awareness, If there are reports of polio from vaccines, Rotarians supporting vaccine programs are responsible to learn more and make educated evaluations of what went wrong in these reported cases. There should be some more information available about these cases. I also am surprised more people are not asking for it.
